Leopard trapped after entering baited cage in Bahraich; villagers breathe sigh of relief

Bahraich: A leopard repeatedly spotted near human habitation and allegedly responsible for killing several livestock in Jugrajpur village of the Nanpara Range was trapped by the forest department on Saturday, bringing relief to residents.According to forest officials, the leopard had been roaming around the village and nearby populated areas for several days, creating fear among villagers concerned about their livestock and families.Following complaints, the department installed a trap cage, increased patrolling and advised residents to remain cautious. A goat was tied inside the cage as bait, and the leopard entered the trap on Saturday.The news of the capture prompted several residents to gather at the spot. Forest personnel later transported the caged leopard to the Nanpara Range office. Officials said it will undergo a medical examination, following which further action will be taken as per the directions of senior wildlife authorities and applicable protocols.DFO Sundaresa said the department had received repeated reports of the leopard’s movement near populated areas. Following the alerts, forest teams were placed on heightened vigilance and a trap cage was installed to safely capture the animal.The department appealed to villagers to remain alert and immediately inform officials if they spot a leopard or any other wild animal near residential areas or forest boundaries. Residents were also urged not to approach or crowd around wildlife and to maintain a safe distance.
