Two sisters drown in Saryu while feeding fish in Gonda

Lucknow: Two sisters drowned in Saryu river near Shri Ram Janaki Temple in the Bhauriganj area of Gonda district on Sunday morning while feeding fish on the riverbank. The deceased were identified as Supriya (15) and her younger sister Suhani (9).Police said the girls were daughters of Arun Kumar Tiwari and lived in Baddu Purwa of Rajpur gram panchayat under Parsapur police station limits. They had gone to the temple, located about a kilometre from their house, earlier in the day.The incident occurred around 11.30 am when the sisters were sitting near the edge of the river and feeding fish. Suhani reportedly lost her balance and slipped into the water, which was deep at the spot. On seeing her struggling, Supriya entered the river to try to save her. However, she too was overwhelmed by the depth and flow and drowned. Witnesses said both girls went under within moments, causing panic among people nearby.Local residents rushed to help, entered the river and began searching for the sisters. After a sustained effort, they were pulled from the water and taken by ambulance to Community Health Centre in Parsapur, where doctors examined them and declared them dead. The incident comes as Saryu’s water level has risen due to recent rains and inflow of floodwater, increasing risks along the banks.Parsapur station house officer Kamla Shankar Chaturvedi confirmed the sequence of events, saying Suhani slipped into the river and Supriya drowned while attempting a rescue.
