LUCKNOW: A 10-foot-deep sinkhole opened in the middle of a road near the residence of former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma in Lucknow, leaving a motorcyclist injured. The incident occurred beside a metro pillar, barely a short distance from the IT College intersection.The motorcyclist fell into the cavity and was taken to hospital. He was later discharged, officials said.According to the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, seepage from a drain running beside the metro pillar caused the road to cave in. The affected stretch has been barricaded and repair work is under way. Officials said the barricading was necessary to prevent further accidents and regulate traffic around the damaged portion.Meanwhile, a separate makeshift barrier was put up by residents in the middle of the road at Ashray in Eldeco-2 after a pothole emerged on the stretch. The area falls under Zone 8 of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation and has multiple potholes, posing a risk to commuters, particularly during poor visibility or rainfall.Several locations have been identified for monitoring over road cave-ins, waterlogging and traffic disruption. These include the sewer manhole road cave-in near Rolex Apartment in Chinhat, the Taj Hotel-Marine Drive underpass, Vibhuti Khand near the police station, G-20 Road near the LDA headquarters, Gomti Nagar Extension, Kamta Chauraha, Matiyari, Daliganj underpass, Kapoorthala Chauraha and areas behind the LMC headquarters in Lalbagh.Other vulnerable locations include A and HIG blocks in Indira Nagar, Jankipuram Extension, Aliganj Sector K, Faizullaganj along Sitapur Road, Indira Nagar sectors 16 and 17, Ashiyana Colony, LDA Colony sectors B and G along Kanpur Road, Mahanagar Sector C and Bhutnath Market. Residents have reported submerged roads, water entering houses, stranded vehicles and traffic bottlenecks at several of these points.
