Russia targeted the Kyiv region with jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the sixth straight day of attacks by Russian forces.
Zelenskyy said in a Sept. 1 post on X that overnight attacks resulted in several injuries and the deaths of 12 people, seven of whom were killed in a strike on a railway depot in the city of Kyiv.
Attacks were also conducted against Odesa, as well as the regions of Chernihiv, Dnipro, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Zhytomyr.
Export infrastructure and a border crossing with Romania were also damaged, he said.
Zelenskyy made a plea to international allies to continue delivery of supplies needed for Kyiv’s anti-ballistic air defense capabilities.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a Sept. 1 Telegram post that overnight it had conducted massive strikes with high precision weapons and long-range attack drones against military targets and energy facilities in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as Odesa and other ports and cities used to store and supply weapons.

Moscow has escalated air attacks against Ukraine in the past few months as Russian progress on the battlefield has slowed. In a new tactic since last week, Russia has sent swarms of drones to target Kyiv and nearby areas day and night. Bombardments in the early hours of Tuesday marked the sixth straight day of these attacks.
Calls for More Sanctions
The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said the recent attacks “demonstrate that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin does not show any signs of realism or a genuine willingness to end a war that he cannot and will never win. Instead, he continues to escalate terror.”
Sybiha also called for international partners to adopt antiballistic sanctions targeting Russia’s missile production among other sanctions.
He said the bill to sanction Russia that the U.S. Senate passed in July “remains vital,” saying he hopes for its swift passage in the House.
“This demonstration of American strength will advance diplomacy, signal to the Kremlin that games are over, and force Putin to the negotiating table to finally end this senseless bloodshed,” he said.
Championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the bill would introduce sanctions on Russian entities and tariffs on the top purchasers of Russian oil and gas.
Putin Meets With Modi
The U.S.-led peace talks stalled this year as Ukraine refused Russian demands to cede territory.
Zelenskyy said on Monday he had held a “detailed and constructive” call with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, and that the sides were working to finalize dates for a visit to Ukraine.
At the start of talks in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Putin to end the Ukraine war.
Putin responded that Moscow is “moving forward along this path.”
According to state-run news agency TASS, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “Putin has informed Modi about the special military operation course,” using Moscow’s preferred description of Russia’s military activities against Ukraine.
