Lucknow: Issuing a stern warning to criminals operating from outside Uttar Pradesh or from abroad, DGP Rajeev Krishna on Monday said such offenders should not assume they can evade the law by masterminding crimes from beyond the state’s borders.“Criminals cannot think that they will commit a crime and then hide. Those involved in planning or facilitating crimes from outside the state would also face action,” he said.DGP said the police were working on information about people who had taken control of Gogi gang’s operations. He also referred to Shahpuria, whose name had emerged in the investigation and who was believed to be based in Canada.“All aspects are being examined,” he said, adding that the state had recently taken steps to bring criminals based abroad within the reach of Indian law.DGP said Uttar Pradesh would not be allowed to become a safe haven for organised criminal gangs.He said organised crime had been targeted systematically in Uttar Pradesh and that the police had secured convictions in many cases. He claimed that around 2.5 lakh people had been convicted in the past two-and-a-half years, while hundreds had received life sentences.On the issue of gold smuggling, DGP said intelligence-based operations were being conducted to identify and dismantle criminal networks involved in smuggling. He said Nepal border is an open border, making continuous intelligence gathering and checking important.
