U.S. President Donald Trump says he will impose 50 percent tariffs on all Canadian cars and trucks and steel starting on Jan. 1, 2027.
His comments come after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed on Aug. 21, with new U.S. tariffs on about US$20 billion (CA$28 billion) of Canadian products taking effect on Aug. 22, and Canada vowing to retaliate with its own tariffs.
“Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!”
Trump said starting in the new year, tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel will be raised to 50 percent.
Canada has said its retaliatory tariffs would be in effect on Sept. 8.
