Titanium dioxide found in mayonnaise supplied to food stalls; 100 litres seized

Jaipur: Food safety officers Wednesday inspected a sauce and mayonnaise manufacturing unit in Jaipur’s Kho Nagoriyan area and found alleged irregularities, including use of titanium dioxide to bring whiteness to mayonnaise, which was not mentioned on the label.According to the Food safety and standards Act, titanium dioxide cannot be mixed in mayonnaise.

The inspection was conducted at Messrs Shri Shyam Food.A health department official said the firm’s owner, Lavanish Karmchandani, told officers the mayonnaise prepared at the factory is mostly supplied to food stalls. Officials destroyed about 1,250 kg of starch solution that had mosquitoes in it and seized 100 litres of mayonnaise. “Action will be taken as per rules for the deficiencies found in the factory,” an official said.
