Lucknow: BSP national president Mayawati entrusted party national general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra with new responsibilities on Tuesday, with the senior party functionary now set to oversee media management, legal matters and issues related to the Election Commission for the party.Mayawati said Mishra will have a significant role in several party matters in the run-up to the upcoming assembly elections in the state. In her post on X, the BSP chief said, “Satish Chandra Mishra, who has been the national general secretary of BSP for long, a senior advocate, the Advocate General of UP during the BSP regime, president of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council on several occasions, a cabinet minister in the BSP govt, and a Rajya Sabha MP for the party multiple times, has now been entrusted by the party with important responsibilities related to legal and media matters, as well as Election Commission affairs, which will play a crucial role in many ways during the upcoming assembly elections.”Mishra’s profile in the party has been upgraded four days after Mayawati expelled former minister in BSP govt and an important Brahmin leader, Anant Kumar Mishra, alias Antu Mishra, from the party for anti-party activities.At a time when the BSP was harping on adding Brahmin votes to its side in 2027, the expulsion of Antu Mishra had raised questions about the party’s intent. However, a day later, Mayawati, in a detailed note, explained that leaders who had been expelled so far had done more harm to the party than good and had also failed to bring people from their respective castes into the party fold.Now, by elevating SC Mishra’s stature in the party, she has sent a message to Brahmins in UP that her intent to give them due importance remains clear.Mishra, notably, was at the helm of organising ‘Brahmin Sammelans’ in UP ahead of the 2022 assembly elections. Though he has not been at the forefront of any elections that the party has faced in UP or elsewhere since 2022, the party’s legal matters have always been looked after by him. Now, he will have a central role in the party.
