Renting house to foreigners? Inform police or risk being booked

Bengaluru: If you’re renting out your premises to a foreigner, keep the jurisdictional police in the loop. If not, you could be charged with violating the Foreigners Act and related rules.Issuing this warning, city police have intensified their crackdown on foreign nationals overstaying in the city. In fact, a special drive conducted on Wednesday led Kothanur police to a house in Kempegowda Layout, RK Hegde Nagar, where two Sudanese nationals were staying without the owner, Riyaz Hussen, informing police.DCP (northeast) GK Mithin Kumar said landlords are legally required to submit a C-Form containing the details of foreign nationals staying in their properties, as per govt guidelines. Failure to provide such information can result in foreign nationals continuing to stay even after the expiry of their visas and passports, and could lead to their involvement in unlawful activities. “We will continue the drive against foreign nationals staying illegally; and if the landlords fail to submit C-Form, they will face action,” Kumar said.Police said Hussen had rented out the house to Badr Abdulkarim, 22, and Ali Taha Mohamed Adam, 20. Hussen and Adam entered into a rental agreement about a year ago after the latter claimed to possess a valid visa. However, Adam was found to be staying illegally. Abdulkarim was involved in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the past, and police suspect the duo was earning money by working as narcotics couriers. Adam was produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, while Abdulkarim was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. A case was registered against Hussen as well under the Foreigners Act.HM orders statewide driveOn Thursday, home minister G Parameshwara said he has instructed the police department to conduct a special drive across the state to trace foreign nationals staying illegally, including Bangladeshis. “I’ve also instructed that all chemical factories should be visited, brought on record, and monitored,” he said. Addressing varying claims about illegal Bangladeshi nationals, he added, “Each one quotes random figures; some say there are 20 lakh illegal Bangladeshi nationals. I informed the House during the session that 370 Bangladeshi nationals have been deported so far.”
