The Google Search Console (GSC) Removals tool allows you to temporarily hide URLs from Google Search results or request the removal of outdated or sensitive content. Here’s how it works:

Types of Removals in Google Search Console:

  1. Temporary Removals

    • Hides a URL from Google Search for about 6 months.

    • Two options:

      • Remove URL: Blocks the page from appearing in search (but doesn’t delete it from the web).

      • Clear Cached URL: Removes the cached version and snippet.

  2. Outdated Content Removal

    • If a page has been updated/deleted but still shows old info in Google, you can request an update.

    • Requires the page to no longer exist (404/410) or have significantly changed.

  3. SafeSearch Filtering Removal Requests

    • If your site contains adult content but should not be filtered by SafeSearch, you can request a review.

How to Use the Removals Tool:

  1. Go to Google Search Console.

  2. Select your property (website).

  3. Navigate to Removals under the Indexing section.

  4. Choose the type of removal request and submit the URL(s).

Important Notes:

  • Temporary removals expire after ~6 months (you’ll need to renew if still needed).

  • Permanent removal requires the page to return a 404/410 or have a noindex tag.

  • Google may still show the URL if other sites link to it (backlinks can reinstate visibility).

When to Use This Tool?

  • Remove sensitive/private data accidentally indexed.

  • Hide old product pages that no longer exist.

  • Fix cached copies showing outdated content.
