Cancer patient dies after setting himself on fire in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: A 50-year-old cancer patient died after he set himself on fire in the Asarwa area of the city on Sunday night. Ashok Thakkar, the victim, succumbed to his injuries on Monday. According to Shahibaug police inspector J H Sindhav, the incident took place around 9pm on Sunday.Thakkar was rescued and taken to the hospital, but died during treatment on Monday morning. Sindhav said Thakkar was a cancer patient and had lost his wife six years ago. The couple did not have any children. According to the case details, Thakkar allegedly poured a flammable liquid over himself in a public place and set himself on fire. Bystanders rushed to help him, threw water on him to douse the fire, and then took him to the Civil Hospital.

Shahibaug police registered an accidental death case while initiating further inquiry. Police said it appeared that Thakkar may have taken the extreme step due to distress linked to his illness.
