Patna: Bihar is intensifying efforts to curb repeated traffic violations through a large-scale action targeting habitual offenders. The state transport department is preparing to suspend or cancel driving licences in around 52,000 cases, following recommendations received from police and traffic authorities.During a comprehensive review meeting conducted via videoconference on Tuesday, state transport commissioner Arif Ahsan instructed all district transport officers, additional DTOs, motor vehicle inspectors, ESI officials, and RTA Secretaries across the state to give top priority to these cases. He stressed that drivers who repeatedly flout traffic rules must face strict consequences, including licence suspension or outright cancellation.Ahsan directed that vehicle registration numbers linked to such repeated violations should be published in newspapers, followed by the issuance of legal notices and proper hearings before final decisions are taken. He made it clear that enforcement must be swift and decisive to reduce road accidents caused by persistent rule-breakers. The districts reporting the highest number of pending cases include Patna, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur.Beyond enforcement, the Commissioner reviewed several key initiatives aimed at improving road safety and public convenience. He took stock of the proposed cashless treatment scheme designed to provide immediate medical aid to road accident victims without financial barriers. Progress on pending registration certificates and driving licences, installation of PM E-Drive charging stations, clearance of pending permit applications, and intensified checks for helmet and seatbelt usage were also discussed in detail.Reaffirming the government’s commitment under the “Sabka Samman: Jeevan Aasaan” (Ease of Living) component of Saat Nishchay-3, Ahsan emphasised that transport-related services must reach citizens in a timely and seamless manner. He categorically stated that any delay in delivering these services is completely unacceptable.He further instructed officials to ensure that no pendency remains in the printing or dispatch of driving licences and registration certificates. All pending DL and RC applications are to be cleared without further delay so that people receive their documents promptly.
