New Delhi: Dismissing the bail plea of a gig worker accused of stealing a 32-metre copper cable from a metro line, the high court said he put the life and limb of all in “utter danger.”HC refused to grant relief to the accused, saying he played with the lives of the public.
Justice Saurabh Banerjee said the accused did not merely indulge in “some foolhardy antics”, but acted in a way that posed a threat to the lives of the public, and also pointed out he is a habitual offender.“While granting bail, this court must take into cognisance the public good versus the private good involved herein. The applicant herein is guilty of playing with the lives of the general public,” the HC observed in a recent order. The accused, a delivery boy for a food delivery app, was caught with the copper cable in Punjabi Bagh following a report of theft by Traction Power Control on the intervening night of June 29 and 30, 2025, according to the police.Since being nabbed, Shivam was in judicial custody.Keen to establish a deterrent effect for such crimes, the police lodged FIRs against him for the offence of theft as well as for obstructing the running of a train, maliciously wrecking a train, or causing sabotage and damage to, or destruction of, certain metro railway properties. It strongly opposed the bail plea and informed the court that the accused was a habitual offender with significant criminal antecedents.
