New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) pet park project at Jangpura has remained in a limbo for nearly two years as the civic body is yet to finalise an agency to run the facility.Developed in early 2023 over a 1.5-acre area, the pet park was envisioned as a multi-purpose recreational space for pet dogs, with plans to function as a day-care centre and provide basic veterinary services. However, in the absence of an operator, the infrastructure lies unused. Initially, the process was delayed as the MCD standing committee had not been formed. The committee was to finalise rates and approve offers by the agency selected through the tendering process. Even after a high-powered committee was constituted in June 2025, the proposal was not tabled. Officials said the proposal will soon be placed before the higher authority, after which the process of appointing an operator may begin. “The tendering process for the project is complete and now it will be placed before the standing committee for final approval,” an official said. The pet park is expected to offer several unique features, including the presence of veterinary doctors, a sand pit for playing, a pet supplies shop, a café with a party area, a day-care facility, dog trails and a swimming area. Dedicated defecation zones with adequate lighting will be provided, and boards outlining rules and regulations will be installed. “With Delhi becoming increasingly congested and leash laws more restrictive, dog owners are looking for safe, off-leash spaces where pets can spend time. Properly fenced dog parks offer an effective solution,” an official said. The park will have arrangements for running, swimming, training, tracking, digging, herding and companionship activities. The facility will also include medical and grooming outlets and a day-care service to assist working pet owners. Access to the park will be allowed only after registration. “Registration counters will be set up to ensure convenience and safety for all users,” the official said. Operation of this park becomes even more imperative following the Supreme Court’s order to MCD to develop shelters for attacking stray dogs. A small portion of the site might be developed as a shelter for strays with a separate entrance and no linkage to the pet dogs’ recreational area.
