Four-month-old foetus found near Zirakpur housing society

Mohali: Panic gripped Penta Homes, a residential society in Zirakpur, after a four-month-old foetus was found lying near the wall of a flat Saturday.Police reached the spot on receiving information and took the foetus into custody. Officials said it may have been lying there for nearly two days. The remains have been shifted to the Derabassi Civil Hospital mortuary. A case has been registered against an unidentified person and an investigation is under way.In his statement, Rakesh Singh, an IT professional residing in Penta Homes on rent, told police that around 12 noon on Jan 31, he noticed the foetus near the side wall while walking outside his residence. A preliminary assessment indicated that the foetus was around four months old and had been abandoned.Following the report, ASI Rajiv Kumar from Zirakpur police station, along with a police team including women personnel, reached the location. Singh’s statement was recorded in the presence of the society manager, Angrez Singh, after which the foetus was taken for medical examination.Police registered a case under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unidentified person. Senior police officers and the control room were informed, and the foetus has been sent for detailed medical analysis to determine the circumstances of the abandonment.Police said CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed and entry-exit records of the society are being checked. Efforts are on to identify the person involved. Residents expressed concern over the incident and sought swift action.
