Kanpur: Several advocates gheraoed Nawabganj police station and raised slogans after police detained former Bar Association general secretary Rakesh Tiwari in connection with the 2021 shooting and murder of advocate Rajaram Verma in Ganganagar Housing Society under the Nawabganj police station area.

After nearly 10 hours of commotion, Tiwari was released on bond.Tiwari was picked up from NRI City on Wednesday evening and taken by police and a special team to Police Lines for questioning. . He was later taken to Nawabganj police station, where hundreds of advocates followed and created a ruckus with sloganeering.As the situation escalated, one platoon of PAC and forces from police stations, including Kakadeo, Swaroop Nagar, Kohna, Beconganj, Colonelganj, Gwaltoli, Bajaria and Rawatpur, were called to the spot. Police closed roads on both sides as advocates gathered and demanded Tiwari’s release. They claimed Tiwari was being unnecessarily dragged into the murder case. Joint commissioner of police (Crime) Vinod Singh reached the spot and attempted to pacify the protesters.

The gherao that began in the evening continued until midnight, after which he was released on bond. JCP Vinod Kumar Singh said, “Questioning is being conducted. This is part of the investigation.”In 2021, advocate Rajaram Verma was murdered in the NRI City area. After the accused were sent to jail, a charge sheet was filed in the court. The victim’s son expressed disagreement with the investigation and, about 2-3 months ago, submitted a complaint letter demanding reinvestigation. After receiving orders, reinvestigation started in which some new names emerged, including that of advocate Rakesh Tiwari. Police said two businessmen who are directors of NRI City also figured among the names. tnn
