Lucknow: Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, currently lodged in Deoria district jail on charges of fraud, was admitted to Maharshi Deoraha Baba Medical College on Saturday after his health deteriorated following abdominal pain and restlessness. According to jail officials, Thakur was taken to hospital in a jail ambulance and examined by surgeon Dr Rakesh Kumar. A preliminary examination suggested that the abdominal pain could be related to appendix.
Doctors admitted him to the surgical ward of the medical college’s new OPD building, where he was kept under observation. Ultrasound and blood tests were advised, and further treatment will be decided after the reports are received. Security arrangements at the medical college were tightened in and around the surgical ward. Entry into the ward was restricted, with only medical staff and authorised officials allowed access to ensure uninterrupted treatment and maintenance of law and order. Thakur was arrested in Dec 2025 in connection with an alleged fraud related to the allotment of an industrial plot in Deoria in 1999. Police alleged that he misused official position and forged documents to obtain the plot in his wife’s name, following which a case was registered on charges of cheating and forgery. This is the second time that Thakur has taken ill. Earlier in Jan, he was admitted to Deoria Medical College from where he was referred to AIIMS Gorakhpur and then to SGPGI in Lucknow. He had complained of severe chest pain and heaviness. He was sent back to jail after recovery.
