Chennai: A 15-year-old from Chengalpet, who became pregnant after sexual abuse by a neighbour, died at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) following sepsis and multi-organ failure two weeks after she delivered a dead three-month fetus.She was referred from the Government Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital. Police registered a case under the Pocso Act based on information given by the doctors here on Jan 17.
The girl was admitted to the hospital in Chengalpet on Jan 8 with fever. Test reports confirmed her pregnancy. She was administered medication, including antibiotics and antivirals, for persistent fever.On Jan 14, she delivered a dead male fetus. Soon, she developed complications, including multi-organ failure, and was referred to the general hospital in Chennai for critical care management.On Jan 17, she was admitted to the critical care unit of RGGGH. Her condition marginally improved initially, but it deteriorated soon after, doctors said. “She suffered severe infection, which led to multi-organ failure and death,” said one of the doctors who treated her. She died on Thursday.Police said no dying declaration could be recorded, but they are waiting for information from the postmortem report. Preliminary inquiries revealed that her neighbour, aged about 30, was responsible for the girl’s pregnancy, police said. Further investigation is underway.
