Hisar: The Fatehabad Police’s de-addiction campaign emerged as a beacon of hope for several people. One such success story is that of 38-year-old Prem Kumar of Rattakhera village in Ratia, who successfully rebuilt his life after years of substance abuse.Prem Kumar, a Class X pass, once led a stable and content life, working as an accountant and supporting his family. Known for his honesty and diligence, he steadily secured a respectable future. However, a single misstep altered the course of his life. During a visit to Chandigarh with friends, Prem experimented with drugs for the first time. What initially seemed like temporary relief soon turned into dependency. Gradually, the habit escalated into addiction, forcing him to rely heavily on prescription drugs. As the addiction deepened, Prem lost his job and his financial condition deteriorated. Frequent domestic disputes became routine, and the situation worsened to the extent that his children began to fear him. Attempts by his wife to counsel him only added to the tension, as addiction clouded his judgement. In a desperate bid to sustain his addiction, Prem became involved in procuring and selling drugs from Punjab. He was subsequently arrested and spent nearly 2 years in jail. Social stigma followed, and he found himself isolated from relatives, neighbours and society at large, leaving him physically, mentally and emotionally shattered.A turning point came with the intervention of the Fatehabad Police’s de-addiction initiative. Under the supervision of Sub-Inspector Sundar Lal, in-charge of the drug de-addiction team, awareness programmes and counselling camps were regularly organised in the Ratia area. Despite being emotionally exhausted, Prem’s family refused to give up on him and approached sub-inspector Mahendra Singh for help.Recognising the seriousness of the situation, SI Mahendra Singh informed senior officers, following which Prem was admitted to the govt de-addiction centre in Ratia with the approval of the Superintendent of Police.Thereafter, consistent counselling, medical treatment, sustained family support and empathetic police monitoring helped Prem reclaim his life. Gradually, his confidence returned, and he realised that recovery was possible. Today, Prem is completely drug-free and works in a factory, leading a peaceful and dignified life with his family. Sharing his experience, Prem said addiction turned life into misery for his wife and children, yet his wife stood by him throughout the ordeal. “There was a time when I could not tolerate even a minor injury to my wife, but addiction made me forget my responsibilities. I now promise to protect and care for my family and never return to that dark phase,” he said.Caption of photo: Fatehabad Superintendent of Police Siddhant Jain felicitating Prem, who successfully overcame drug addiction and began a new life.
