Goa police arrests two from Assam in Rs 1.4 crore cyberfraud

Panaji: Cybercrime cell of Goa police on Saturday arrested Ashadul Islam, 24, and Yasmina Ahmed, 32, both residents of Assam, for their alleged involvement in a major inter-state cyberfraud case of Rs 1.4 crore.Goa police registered the case based on a complaint filed by a resident of Bicholim.Cybercrime SP Rahul Gupta said the accused impersonated officers of CBI and the Supreme Court using multiple WhatsApp numbers and subjected the complainant to a fake “digital arrest”, coercing her into transferring Rs 1.4 crore to multiple bank accounts.Gupta said that, following a technical investigation of the communication between the fraudsters and the victim, the accused were traced and arrested from Nagaon, Assam, by a special team of the crime branch.The SP said that after the apprehension, it was found that they were earlier arrested in Assam for similar cyber fraud activities.“The same mobile phones were used in the Goa case also. The seizure done by Assam police will be included in the Goa police case too,” Gupta said. He further added that the same mobile numbers were linked to another digital arrest complaint registered in Goa, amounting to a fraud of Rs 63.5 lakh.Gupta said that the investigation revealed that the accused were operating multiple mobile numbers using common IMEI devices, which were found linked to multiple cyberfraud complaints across the country.Islam and Ahmed are the main accused in the chain of financial frauds across the country, and it is expected that multiple cases will be solved, police said.
