Kolkata: The counsel representing Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Friday sought an additional 10 days to file a report on McPherson Square at the Calcutta High Court.This was the second extension that the civic body sought on the issue. After the case on the destruction of greenery at McPherson Square came up for hearing on Dec 19, KMC was given 2 weeks to file a report. When the case next came up for hearing on Jan 2, the KMC counsel sought an additional 2 weeks to file a report. In the latest hearing on Friday, KMC again sought 10 days to file the report.Since there is no stay order related to the ongoing redevelopment and beautification project at the park, work was underway, including a controversial fountain that is being installed in the park. A section of local residents, as well as environmentalists, questioned the need for an embellishment like a fountain in the park and the hazard it can pose due to mosquito breeding.Green action group PUBLIC filed a PIL following the felling of trees at the park, ostensibly as part of a beautification drive. The redevelopment and maintenance of the park was handed to a private agency that claimed it would turn it into one of the best parks in the city.
