Walnut seller killed, 4 injured as bldg wall collapses in Nayagaon

Mohali: An elderly walnut seller was killed and four others were injured Thursday afternoon when a wall and part of a roof collapsed during the demolition of a building in Nayagaon’s main market.The incident took place around 12 noon when heavy machinery was being used to pull down the structure. Eyewitnesses said a large section of the building suddenly gave way, sending debris crashing onto the street where several people were standing.Five people were trapped under the rubble. Local residents rushed to help and began rescue efforts before emergency teams arrived. Four injured persons were pulled out and taken for medical treatment, while one elderly man was declared dead at the spot.

The deceased, identified as a man from Kashmir, had reportedly arrived in the area a few days earlier in search of work and was selling walnuts outside the same building being demolished.Sources at the site said shopkeepers and vendors had been asked to move away before demolition began, but some people remained nearby. Moments after the machine started pulling down the structure, a major portion of the wall collapsed onto the road.Police and local authorities reached the spot soon after and began clearing the debris. An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain whether safety protocols were followed during the demolition.
