Mohali: The flying squad-1 of Mohali vigilance bureau has arrested ASI Bir Chand, posted at Balongi police station, for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹1.25 lakh in exchange for shielding a family from legal action in an assault case that took place after a wedding ceremony.The action followed a complaint supported by an audio recording, which the complainant uploaded to the vigilance bureau’s anti-corruption helpline (95012-00200). In the recording, the ASI is allegedly heard demanding Rs 1,25,000 for the station house officer and Rs 25,000 for himself. The complainant, Satish, is heard saying he would arrange Rs 1 lakh by evening.The vigilance FIR notes that the verification process, audio evidence and the complainant’s statement established prima facie involvement of ASI Bir Chand in an offence under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.Satish, a resident of Maloa Colony, Chandigarh, told the vigilance bureau that his daughter Anjali married Arsh of Bad Majra, Mohali, on Nov 27, 2025. After the wedding, a reception was hosted by the in-laws. A fight reportedly broke out among some youths after the party, leaving one person seriously injured. Satish alleged that ASI Bir Chand threatened to register an FIR against Arsh and demanded Rs 50,000 to avert legal action, later extorting another Rs 30,000 from the family.Despite this, the ASI continued to allegedly pressure the family through calls, demanding over Rs 1 lakh. On Dec 22, 2025, he allegedly said the case had been forwarded under Section 307 and that the matter could be “settled” for Rs 1 lakh along with additional services.The complainant recorded subsequent conversations and shared them with the vigilance bureau, following which a case was registered at the vigilance police station on Jan 29, 2026. The probe has been assigned to head constable (LR) Manjit Singh. Officials said the roles of the SHO and other officers mentioned in the audio clips will also be examined.ASI Bir Chand was arrested, produced in court and remanded for further investigation.
