Roads laid over manholes trigger sewage backflow in Avadi’s Annai Theresa Nagar

Chennai: Residents of Annai Theresa Nagar in Ward 32 of Avadi Corporation are battling with raw sewage flooding their streets after thier roads paved six months ago directly over existing manholes. On Friday, at the Avadi corporation council meeting, the issue was raised by a councillor. At least 10 manholes in the area are buried under bitumen, making it difficult for routine maintenance. As a result, drains weren’t undesilted for months, sparking blockages and reverse flow into homes, raising health and hygiene alarms.

Ward 38 councillor Megala Srinivasan said when roads are relaid, basic engineering norms weren’t followed. “In Chennai and Tambaram, manholes are either raised to road level or left uncovered during resurfacing for easy access. Here, roads were laid without raising manholes or marking access points,” she said. Contractors, who ignore access to drain, maintained their responsibility was only to relay road, she said.
