Panaji: The transport department, in coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD), will install artificial intelligence-based (AI) traffic signals with cameras at 92 locations across the state in the first phase to strengthen road safety enforcement.Transport director Pravimal Abhishek announced this while speaking at an event in Margao on Friday. He explained that the introduction of AI-based cameras aimed to enable “technology-driven and evidence-based enforcement.”The smart cameras will be capable of detecting a wide range of traffic violations, including triple-seat riding, number plate violations, and other offences, and will operate round the clock.“Road safety is an individual responsibility,” Abhishek said.“Basic practices such as wearing seat belts, using helmets, following lane discipline, and adhering to speed limits must be treated as a fundamental duty. There should not be a need for others to tell us our duty,” he said.In a related development, Abhishek said the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC), in collaboration with the urban development department, submitted a proposal to Goa govt for the procurement of nearly 200 additional electric vehicles. He also informed that the PWD identified road accident black spots across Goa, and corrective measures are being planned.“Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce road safety education into the school curriculum, as a large number of accidents are caused by human error while driving,” he added.Officials said the phased rollout is intended to combine enforcement, awareness and infrastructure improvements across the state.
