Ahmedabad: In a meeting of the AMC’s standing committee held on Friday, a proposal was approved to cut down 700 trees, planted just 1.5 years ago, to make way for an underground water tank in the Isanpur area. A proposal to sell the Prahladnagar multi-level parking complex, along with its plot, was also cleared.Currently, the Isanpur Water Distribution Station — located near the lake behind the Isanpur ward office — operates two underground tanks with a combined capacity of 4.54 million litres. This facility serves the Isanpur village area, Govindwadi, and surrounding neighbourhoods, catering to 30,000 residents. Due to rapid development, including the redevelopment of old societies and the construction of new high-rise residential projects, local corporators requested an increase in capacity. Consequently, the standing committee approved the construction of a new 2.1-million-litre underground tank at an estimated cost of Rs 5.3 crore. However, the selected plot currently houses around 700 trees, all of which will be cleared for the project. The AMC constructed the Prahladnagar multi-level parking-cum-commercial building on Anandnagar Road two years ago at a cost of Rs 93 crore. Despite four auction attempts over the past two years, the AMC failed to sell the shops and commercial spaces. As a result, the AMC now plans to sell the entire complex along with the land. The winning bidder will have the flexibility to discontinue the multi-level parking and repurpose the building. A statement from Devang Dani, the chairman of the standing committee, read: “We approved the construction of the Isanpur water tank, which includes permission to cut the necessary trees.”
