Mumbai: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has told the Bombay high court that Savarkar Sadan cannot be declared a centrally protected monument (CPM) as it is not one hundred years old. CPMs are heritage sites of national importance, reports Rosy Sequeira.The building consists of eight flats. It was originally built in 1938 as a ground plus one bungalow. Three floors were added to the building in 1984. “For the declaration of any ancient structure as a centrally protected monument, it has to fulfil the criteria of being more than 100 years old” as per Section 2 (definition of ancient monument) of the Act, stated ASI’s Jan 29 reply on behalf of the Centre to a PIL.“It is suitable for inclusion either in the state protected monument or BMC heritage list,” ASI said, urging Bombay high court to “pass appropriate orders”.
