Judgment in rape case against Babush deferred to Feb 11

Panaji: A special court on Friday adjourned its judgment in the alleged rape case against revenue minister and Panaji MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate to Feb 11.

The case dates back to 2016, when the survivor alleged that her mother sold her to then St Cruz MLA Monserrate. She also alleged she was drugged and raped by him. A 250-page chargesheet was filed against him, and 40 witnesses were added in the case.When the FIR was filed, charges under the Goa Children’s Act were added, but following the ossification test, she was found to be above the age of 16, and sections under the Goa Children’s Act were dropped. The case was heard in the sessions court.
