GURGAON: A 36-year-old man, who brutally killed his two-year-old stepson in Faridabad’s Ballabhgarh days ago, was arrested on Wednesday. The incident took place on Jan 25 when the accused — Ranbir Singh, a resident of Sishta village in UP’s Hathras district — allegedly slammed the child on the ground. He assaulted the child repeatedly, following which he died on the spot. The matter came to light after Singh attempted to pass off the child’s death as an accidental fall. A case was registered under sections of murder at Sector 58 police station.“Singh, who lived on rent at Sikri Mohalla Road in Ballabhgarh and worked as a labourer, confessed to killing the child during interrogation. The accused married the child’s mother in Nov 2025. The woman had three children from her previous marriage, whom Singh considered a burden. He harboured hostility towards the children and planned to eliminate them,” an officer said, adding the two other children are aged five months (a girl child) and four years (a boy).According to police, the crime was uncovered after inconsistencies were found in the accused’s version of events. Singh initially claimed that the toddler fell from the stairs of the rented accommodation. However, further inquiry and technical investigation raised suspicion, leading to his arrest. On Sunday evening, Singh took the boy outside the house and walked some distance away from the rented room. There, he assaulted the child, causing fatal injuries, the officer added. Singh then returned home and informed family members that the child suffered injuries after falling from the stairs. The child was taken for medical attention, where doctors found injuries inconsistent with an accidental fall. Police were alerted, following which a detailed investigation was initiated. Police spokesperson (SI) Yashpal Yadav said, “The accused was produced before a local court, which granted two days of police remand.” Police are also examining whether the accused harmed or threatened the other children in the household.
