Unarmed combat, hostage crisis and more: What Delhi Police SWAT commandos are trained for

NEW DELHI: Kajal Chaudhary, 27, a SWAT commando with Delhi Police’s Special Cell, died on January 27 at a hospital in Ghaziabad, five days after she was allegedly attacked by her husband at their home in west Delhi’s Mohan Garden. She was four months pregnant. Part of an elite force trained to handle challenges unique to the capital, Delhi’s all women SWAT commandos are prepared for high-risk operations such as climbing multi-storey buildings and conducting hostage rescue missions at hotels, buses and Metro stations. They are trained in unarmed combat, ambush and counter-ambush tactics, and both jungle and urban operations. Their training includes building interventions, vehicle and bus interventions, and VVIP security duties. The commandos are also imparted basic knowledge of explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and trained to use a wide range of weapons.
