Shimla: Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced that the state govt is setting up a state-of-the-art Cancer Care Centre (CCC) at Dr Radhakrishnan Govt Medical College (Dr RKGMC), Hamirpur, to strengthen cancer treatment facilities in Himachal Pradesh. Sukhu said the centre will include 11 specialised departments to comprehensively meet the medical needs of cancer patients. These departments will include medical oncology, surgical oncology, pain palliation, nuclear medicine, anaesthesiology and critical care, onco pathology, paediatric oncology, radiology imaging, gynaecological oncology, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, and radiation oncology. The facility will offer advanced and specialised treatment under one roof. The chief minister noted that the rising risk of cancer among the population made it essential to develop a robust and systematic treatment mechanism. Several reports highlighted the urgent need for structured screening, prevention, monitoring, documentation, and timely intervention. He emphasised the importance of creating seamless linkages between primary healthcare institutions and advanced tertiary-level cancer care centres.
With a strong focus on prevention, early diagnosis, and comprehensive patient care, the state govt initiated the establishment of a state cancer centre at Dr RKGMC, Hamirpur, and the department of medical education already took necessary steps in this direction. The proposed state cancer institute will be housed in a multi-storey building with a capacity of 264 beds dedicated to cancer patients. Key facilities, including OPDs, laboratories, a pharmacy, emergency services, and nuclear medicine units, will be located on the ground floor. Sukhu expressed concern over the state’s high cancer incidence rate and said the initiative is vital to ensure accessible and quality cancer care. MSID: 127777168 413 |
