Shillong: A day after a poster was purportedly put up in the West Garo Hills district headquarters, Tura, by global terror group ISIS-K — the so-called Islamic State’s Central and South Asian unit — threatening the indigenous Garo community residing in the plain belts to vacate the land, Meghalaya Police on Thursday said they have obtained “some leads” on the incident. A thorough probe is currently underway.“We have some leads but we cannot divulge them with you now, it will be done at an appropriate time,” SP Abraham Sangma told reporters.

According to a preliminary assessment, the act may be a deliberate attempt by certain individuals or a group with vested interests to create fear, anxiety and disturb the prevailing law-and-order situation.“A case has been registered at Araimile Police Station and investigation has started. All-out efforts are being made to identify and trace the persons responsible for pasting the poster and those who are circulating it to create panic and create communal disharmony. Accordingly, necessary actions will be taken against them as per relevant section (s) of law,” the SP said.Deputy CM in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong has assured that the govt will take necessary action regarding the poster, which has since been removed. “Let the govt take necessary action but we will make sure that such thing should not happen,” he said, describing the issue as “very serious”.Police have advised citizens not to panic or be misled by such messages on social media or any other platforms. Citizens have been requested to immediately report any suspicious activity or information to the nearest police station, outpost, beat house, or the Police Control Room in Tura.
