Volkswagen Tayron R-line unveiled in India: Design, features & specs

Volkswagen India has finally unveiled the new Volkswagen Tayron R-line SUV in the Indian market. The Tayron will sit at the top of Volkswagen’s India lineup, positioned above the Tiguan R-Line, and will be offered exclusively in a seven-seat configuration. The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will arrive in India via the CKD route, a move that should help keep pricing competitive. The SUV is likely to be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom) and the price announcement is expected to happen sometime in February 2026.

The local assembly of the Tayron R-line is underway at the company’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant. Once introduced, it will take on rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, the upcoming MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq in the Indian market. Design-wise, it features a sharper, sportier appearance with angular bumpers, large 19-inch alloy wheels, and exclusive R-Line branding. Built on the MQB EVO architecture shared with the Tiguan R-Line, it benefits from an extended wheelbase of 2,789 mm, around 109 mm longer to accommodate a third row of seating. The VW Tayron R-Line measures 4792 mm in length, 1866 mm in width, 1665 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2789 mm. Ground clearance is rated at 181 mm and has a boot space of 345 litres (with 3 rows up) 850 litres (with folded 3rd row). Moving to the cabin, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line gets a large 15-inch touchscreen that is angled towards the driver and controls most of the vehicle’s key functions. While the leather-appointed front seats retain the massage function seen on the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron replaces seat heating with front-seat ventilation, a feature better suited to Indian conditions. Other highlights include a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, customisable ambient lighting with up to 30 colour options, and Matrix LED lighting technology. In terms of practicality, the SUV offers up to 850 litres of boot space with the third row folded down. Safety features include Level 2 ADAS, nine airbags, ESC, hill-start and hill-descent controls, a 360-degree camera and more.

Talking about the engine, the Tayron is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo petrol engine which puts out 204 hp of power and 320 nm torque. The engine comes paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels. The Tayron also has secured a five-star overall crash safety rating in Euro NCAP achieving scores of 87 per cent for adult occupant protection and 85 per cent for child occupant protection.Along with the reveal, Volkswagen also confirmed its plans to introduce five new models over the course of the year. The German carmaker has stated that it will launch a new product in every quarter, covering SUV, sedan and hatchback body styles. The rollout has already begun with the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line making its debut in India, marking the first of the five planned introductions, with four additional models scheduled to follow. The remaining four models are expected to include the Volkswagen Tiguan facelift, Volkswagen Virtus facelift, the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4, and the upcoming Volkswagen Tera.
