Mohali: In a brazen daylight murder that raised alarming questions about security in one of Mohali’s most sensitive zones, a man with alleged links to drug smuggling and a previous high-profile murder case was gunned down outside the gates of the DIG and SSP offices on Wednesday afternoon. The victim, Gurvinder Singh alias Guri of Rurki Kham village, had just stepped out of the district court complex after a hearing in a 4-kg poppy smuggling case. What awaited him outside was a rain of bullets.Around 3.20 pm, as Gurvinder and his wife walked out of the court premises, two assailants on a motorcycle rolled into position. One of them — appearing relaxed enough to pass as an acquaintance — moved towards Gurvinder, reportedly shook his hand… and in the next second, pulled out a weapon and fired multiple rounds at point-blank range. In a burst of deafening shots, Gurvinder collapsed instantly. Bullets tore through his face, head, neck and chest, leaving no room for survival. His wife narrowly escaped, a bullet grazing past her neck. When the smoke cleared, 17 empty shells lay scattered on the ground — but not a single stray bullet had hit any nearby vehicle. The precision told investigators everything: this was not a warning, not a scare tactic — it was an elimination.DIG Nanak Singh confirmed the murder, saying the attack appeared to be linked to either a drug rivalry or an ongoing gang feud. “His name had surfaced earlier in the Gurlal Brar murder case, so we are not ruling out a gang war angle,” he said. Multiple teams are now chasing leads and CCTV angles.Gurvinder was one of the accused in the 2020 killing of SOPU president Gurlal Brar, cousin of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, shot dead outside City Emporium Mall in Chandigarh. Intelligence inputs had also linked Gurvinder to international drug trafficker Jodha alias Jodhbir Singh. What has left officers rattled is where the killing happened. The area houses the DIG, SSP, SP and DC offices, besides the district courts — a zone routinely crawling with security staff. That armed attackers could walk in, execute a close-range contract killing, and escape unchallenged has prompted urgent questions about surveillance, policing gaps and on-ground preparedness.Police sealed the stretch, combed the crime scene and began pulling CCTV feeds from surrounding buildings and traffic points. By late evening, no arrests had been made.BOXGoldy Brar gang claims responsibilityHours after the murder, the Goldy Brar–Rohit Godara gang posted on social media claiming responsibility for Gurvinder’s killing, calling it revenge for the murder of Gurlal Brar. Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans confirmed the existence of the post and said the claim was being verified. The post warned rivals, invoked slain gang members, and signalled that the feud was “far from over.”FIR against Goldy BrarMohali Police have registered an FIR against foreign-based gangster and handler Satinderpal Singh alias Goldy Brar in connection with the murder of Gurvinder Singh, who was shot dead near the District Administrative Complex (DAC), Mohali. Ropar range DIG Nanak Singh, along with Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans, said that based on the statement of the deceased’s wife, a prima facie case under Sections 103(1), 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act has been registered at Police Station Sohana against Satinderpal Singh alias Goldy Brar. The complainant stated that Gurvinder Singh had been receiving threats from Goldy Brar, as he was nominated as an accused in the murder case of Gurlal Brar, who was the cousin of Goldy Brar. Police have formed multiple teams to investigate the case and nab the assailants, the DIG added.
