Bhubaneswar: The total budget outlay of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the financial year 2026-27 was pegged at Rs 1050 crore, Rs 49 crore more than 2025-26, with a focus on sanitation, as per the draft budget that was placed in the corporation meeting on Wednesday.The BMC corporators will discuss the various components of the draft budget in a pre-budget discussion next week to finalise the budget to be tabled at Feb-end. The draft budget revealed that BMC’s own revenue was projected at Rs 300 crore.
“Rs 200 crore was set aside for sanitation, while the animal birth control (ABC) programme will get Rs 12 crore. All planned and non-planned projects were allocated Rs 400 crore, while lighting and electrification were given Rs 40 crore,” said a BMC officer.The BMC will also spend substantially on the expansion of the cattle shelter at Jamukoli. The civic body allocated Rs 1,001 crore for the 2025-26 financial year, compared to Rs 1,027 crore for FY 2024-25. This year’s allocation is Rs 49 crore more than the previous financial year, officials said.For the first time in 2024-25, the corporation’s budget allocation surpassed Rs 1,000 crore. Last year, BMC allocated Rs 150 crore for sanitation, which included handling daily municipal solid waste, establishing new wealth centres (where waste is converted into compost), and modernising waste collection and segregation.In FY 2023-24, the BMC made a budgetary allocation of Rs 690 crore. The lion’s share was allocated for various construction works and for the creation of new infrastructure and maintenance. It set aside Rs 235 crore for all kinds of civil construction, which was 34% of the total allocation. Sanitation, another important component, received an allocation of Rs 141 crore.
