Bengaluru: City police have stepped up manhunt for a Nepali couple who allegedly pulled off a brazen daylight heist, fleeing with cash and jewellery worth an estimated Rs 18 crore from a builder’s residence at ASK Lake Garden on Kempapura Main Road in Yemalur.The accused — Dinesh, 32, and his wife Kamala, 25, — are believed to have struck with chilling precision on Jan 25, exploiting a narrow window when the house was left unattended. According to a complaint filed by Shimanth S Arjun, 28, the theft occurred between 9am and 12.30pm while his father, Shivakumar, a builder, was out of town.What has shocked the family is that the couple had entered the household barely 20 days earlier as domestic help, introduced through acquaintances Vikash and Maya Vishu. They worked alongside cooks Siddharama and Ambika, quietly blending into the daily routine — and, investigators suspect, carefully studying the family’s movements.On the morning of Jan 25, at around 9am, the complainant, his wife and mother left the house to attend a ground-breaking ceremony at H Cross on Hoskote–Chintamani Road. Less than four hours later, at 12.38pm, a frantic phone call from cook Ambika shattered the calm: cupboard locks had been smashed and the valuables were gone — allegedly taken by the couple entrusted with the home. They had disconnected power supply to disable CCTV cameras. Soon, the family rushed back. A locker in a ground-floor bedroom had been forced open with an iron bar, with nearly 10 kg of gold and diamond ornaments missing. Another locker in the first-floor bedroom was also found broken, from which about 1.5 kg of gold ornaments, nearly 5 kg of silver jewellery and Rs 11.5 lakh in cash had vanished. The complainant has alleged that the couple meticulously tracked the movements of family members in advance, executing the theft with calculated precision before disappearing without a trace.Police registered a case under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master). The complainant told police that the couple were replacements for regular domestic staff Vikash and Maya and agreed to work for a monthly salary of Rs 27,000.
