Gurgaon: After a six-month halt in operations at the Bandhwari landfill, where the city and Faridabad dump their daily waste, Haryana govt has approved a Rs 126-crore project to restart legacy waste processing. The state govt has cleared the award of contracts to two private agencies, MKG Green Energy Private Limited and Daya Charan and Company, to process 14 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste, split equally between them. Waste processing at Bandhwari stopped in July after MCG barred the two agencies then working at the site due to slow progress.MCG officials confirmed the approval and said work orders would be issued by Jan 29.

“We received the approval and now we will issue the work order by Thursday so that the agencies can begin their work,” said an MCG official. The proposal was approved by a high power works committee, which granted revised administrative sanction with additional conditions. If the volume of waste exceeds estimates, the contractors will be required to process up to 16.8 lakh metric tonnes, 20% more than the approved quantity, at a fixed rate of Rs 900 per metric tonne. The approval for the project, which also requires monthly progress reviews, comes after months during which waste continued to accumulate at the landfill. Data accessed by TOI shows that Bandhwari currently holds 15.9 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste and 8.8 lakh metric tonnes of fresh waste, exceeding the sanctioned processing capacity. In a status report submitted to National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Dec 15, 2025, MCG commissioner stated that legacy waste processing is expected to begin by Mar 10, 2026, with completion targeted for March 2027.Daya Charan and Company had earlier worked at Bandhwari in 2024, when it was awarded a contract to process 3 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste. MKG Green, a Uttar Pradesh-based firm, will be working at the site for the first time.Their agreement with the civic body will include details of manpower and machinery deployment, along with an additional bank guarantee equal to 5% of the project cost.Meanwhile, environmental experts have raised concerns over delays and enforcement issues at Bandhwari.

“With untreated rubbish continuing to pile up even as contracts are finalised, the latest approval may be too little, too late unless execution finally matches intent,” said Vaishali Rana, an environmental activist. For fresh waste processing, the civic body, in its status report submitted to the NGT on Dec 15, 2025, stated that it sent a proposal of Rs 172 crore to the Haryana urban local bodies department in May 2025 for fresh waste processing for 10 years.

The department, however, approved Rs 27 crore for a 3-year period.According to the report, MCG stated that it would start fresh waste processing at the landfill site after clearing around 5 acres of land by the first week of May 2026. The city generates around 1,200 to 1,500 metric tonnes of waste daily, which is transported to Bandhwari.
