Lucknow: BJP‘s Kaiserganj MP Karan Bhushan, who was part of the parliamentary standing committee which approved the UGC equity regulations that have triggered protests, on Wednesday broke his silence on the controversy saying that the committee “had no role whatsoever” in their formulation.In a social media post, Bhushan, the son of BJP strongman Braj Bhushan Sharan Singh, also demanded the UGC to reconsider the regulations, respect public sentiment, and make the necessary amendments to prevent any kind of caste-based animosity from spreading in society.“My sentiments are with the people of our society,” Bhushan said, asserting educational institutions should never be allowed to become centres of caste conflict. “We want to move forward together, inclusively,” he said.Bhushan said that a section of the media, through social media and news channels, was spreading various misconceptions about him regarding the new UGC regulations.“It is extremely unfortunate that such a campaign is being waged without hearing my side of the story,” he said.Bhushan’s assertion was seen as a calibrated damage-control move aimed at distancing himself — and by extension the BJP — from a fast-growing controversy around the UGC equity regulations.
