Rescue efforts continue 24hrs after boat overturns in Barpeta

Guwahati: More than 24 hours have passed since six people went missing after a mechanised country boat capsized in the Brahmaputra in Assam’s Barpeta district on Wednesday. The rescue teams are yet to trace them.The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have also joined the search operation for the missing persons.

A mechanised country boat, carrying 34 people, was travelling from Rahampur towards a riverine area, Borghol, on Tuesday noon. Officials said the boat capsized due to overload. Of the 34, 28 either swam to the bank or were rescued by the rescue teams with the help of civilians.Barpeta revenue circle field officer Jyotirmoy Choudhury said the missing people have been identified as Madhu Mia (60), Sukurjan Nesa (45), Amina Parbin (8), Rahul Amin (7), Aryan Islam (4) and Junufa Yasmin (5).“The search operations by multiple agencies resumed this morning. Divers have been diving continuously. Experts are working very hard to trace them. However, they cannot be traced till this evening,” he said.
