Director Shankar‘s dream project ‘Velpari’ finally gets a major update. For years the project stayed only as a dream. Things did not move forward mainly because producers were not ready to take the risk. After the failures of ‘Indian 2’ and Ram Charan‘s ‘Game Changer’ the situation became more difficult. Many producers stayed away.Now things look different. Velpari has finally found a producer. Reports from Valai Pechu say that a popular production house is ready to bankroll the film on a very big scale. This news has brought fresh hope for Shankar and his fans who have been waiting for this project for a long time. But there is a twist.
Clear budget conditions
According to Tamil media buzz the production house has agreed to produce ‘Velpari’. But they have placed some strict conditions. The production house has asked Shankar to submit the exact budget needed for the film. They have also asked for a clear shooting schedule.More importantly they have requested a written assurance from Shankar. They want him to promise that the budget will not be crossed. This move did not surprise many people. In his recent films Shankar has often exceeded the planned budgets. So the producers want everything to be clear from the beginning.This kind of planning is seen as a good step. It helps both the director and the producer stay on the same page. Also majority of his recent movies after Vikram’s ‘I’ were not impressive even though the production values were top notch.
Pre-production work is already on
Shankar is currently busy with pre-production work for ‘Velpari’. He is working on budget planning and scheduling.Velpari is not a small movie. It is a three-part fantasy historical film. The story is based on Su Venkatesan’s Tamil novel, Veera Yuga Nayakan Velpari. The film tells the story of the legendary Tamil ruler Vel Pari. It shows how he stood strong and fought against the three Tamil kingdoms.
Why Velpari means everything to Shankar
Back in 2025 Shankar spoke openly about Velpari while attending an event for the novel, which sold one lakh copies. At that event, he said, “Once, my dream project was Enthiran. Now, my dream project is Velpari. Whenever a big-budget movie is made, people say it would be a grand venture like Chandralekha, but truly, Velpari will be as big, if not bigger, than that.”He also spoke about why this film is so special to him. Shankar said, “As far as I believe, this film could be one of the biggest ventures ever made, owing to the elements of costume, art, and the level of production it will require. However, the scope of technology makes me say that Velpari would be a global-standard movie, on par with the likes of Game of Thrones or Avatar.”
