Bumrah’s trophy bowls over his Ahmedabad alma mater

Ahmedabad: As the official trophy of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup was brought to the Nirman School in Vastrapur on Wednesday morning, the students greeted it enthusiastically, shouting “Boom Boom Bumrah”.The students lined up to get the autograph of his mother, who served as the school principal for 11 long years. The World Cup trophy is taken to the alma mater of all the players selected for Team India, and Nirman School is where Team India’s bowling spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, studied before shining in the game of cricket. The trophy was on display for some 5,000 students, invited guests, and school staff for two hours on Wednesday morning. It was then taken to Nadiad’s Dharmsinh Desai University, where all-rounder Axar Patel studied. Before being brought to Ahmedabad, the trophy was put on display at Vadodara’s MK School, Hardik Pandya’s alma mater. At Nirman, Bumrah’s mother Daljit Bumrah, and his Ranji Trophy coach, Jayendra Saigal, were among the special guests. Talking to TOI, Bumrah’s mother said, “He (Jasprit) worked very hard. He was always interested in cricket. When he is playing, I don’t watch the game.” She said, “It is so stressful for me to watch the game live. I prefer watching the highlights. When we are together, we never discuss cricket in our family.” Shedding light on Bumrah’s culinary preferences, she said, “He does not eat sweets often. He likes Gujarati and Punjabi cuisine and is fond of jowar and millet rotis.” She wished Team India the best for the ICC tournament, which is to be held here after a long gap of 17 years. Saigal, said, “At the time when Bumrah used to play Ranji Trophy matches, he used to bat as well. He later became a fast bowler.” The coach said, “We found his action unorthodox. We slotted him in the team as its 16th member. Even today, whenever he comes to the Gujarat College ground, there is no change in his practice schedule.”
