Over 5% drop in road fatalities in 2025

Panaji: Even as Goa police had set a target to reduce road fatalities by 20% in 2025, they managed to bring down fatal accidents and deaths by over 5% compared to 2024.According to traffic cell data, 257 fatal accidents were reported in 2025, down from 271 in 2024. Similarly, 269 people died in road accidents in 2025, compared to 287 in the previous year. Police statistics define a fatal accident as one resulting in death, while road deaths refer to the number of fatalities arising from such accidents.Overall, road accidents declined by over 11% in 2025. However, following the state govt’s decision not to challan tourists on the roads and to restrict challan powers to inspector-level officers, fine collections dropped by over 52%. Towards the end of the year, govt allowed police sub-inspectors to issue challans while wearing body-worn cameras to prevent allegations of harassment. An analysis of 2024 accidents showed that most accidents occurred between 6pm and 7pm. A senior police officer said accidents were higher after office hours as people rushed home. Mondays recorded the highest number of accidents at 16.5%, followed by Sundays at 14.5%. Police attributed the Monday spike to commuters speeding to reach offices. In 2024, 286 people died in road accidents, only four fewer than in 2023. Goa police mark a black date on the traffic calendar for every road fatality as a reminder to prevent the next such incident.
