Chandigarh: The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has sent three more drug peddlers from Chandigarh to jail under the PIT NDPS Act, with UT home secretary Mandeep Brar issuing the detention orders. Officials said another list of drug peddlers is being prepared, and more arrests are likely soon.Under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, the accused can be detained for up to one year. The Act, implemented by the Govt of India in 1988, allows authorities to detain individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking so they cannot continue such activities.
In the latest action, the ANTF invoked the Act against three men with multiple drug-related cases registered against them. In the first case, the Act was imposed on Ramkrishan, a resident of Manimajra. Police records show he had nine cases pending against him, including eight at the IT Park police station and one at the Manimajra police station. In the second case, the ANTF detained Dishant Mittal, who also had nine NDPS-related cases registered against him. These included two cases each at police stations 36, 26 and 19, and one each at Sarangpur, police station 17, Sector 14 police station in Panchkula, and Pinjore police station. The third accused, Deepak Mittal alias Vicky, a resident of Sector 45-C, was also booked under the PIT NDPS Act. He was facing several drug trafficking cases and was described as part of an active drug network. He had eight cases registered against him, including six at police station 34 and one each at police stations 49 and 11.In addition to the three peddlers, police also detained 37-year-old Gagan alias Gogi of Dadumajra Colony under the PIT NDPS Act, 1988, and sent him to Burail jail. He was described as a habitual criminal and a notorious drug trafficker. This action follows an earlier crackdown by the ANTF, during which three drug traffickers — including a woman referred to as a “drug queen”— were jailed under the same Act. Bala, known in the drug trade as a notorious operator, had been sent to jail for one year under the PIT NDPS Act. Police records showed that she had 36 criminal cases registered against her, of which 24 were linked to drug supply and sale.Officials said that with additional detention proposals under preparation, the crackdown on drug peddlers in Chandigarh will continue.
