Pune: The Pune Rural police on Monday arrested sarpanch Sunita Karbhari Chowdhari (58) of Sartapwadi, located off Pune-Solapur highway, and her son Rohan (31), for allegedly abetting the suicide of Rohan’s wife, Dipti (30), at their residence on Saturday evening.The case was registered after Dipti’s mother, Hemlata Balasaheb Magar, filed a complaint with the Uruli Kanchan police late on Sunday night, accusing Sunita, Rohan and other members of the Chowdhari family for driving Dipti to take the extreme step.“Dipti died by suicide around 7.30pm on Saturday. An accidental death entry was initially made. After her mother’s statement was recorded, an FIR was registered,” Pune Rural superintendent of police Sandeep Singh Gill said.A dowry death case has now been filed against the family. “Hemlata has alleged that the Chowdhari family harassed Dipti and repeatedly demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakh. Dipti had informed her parents about this over the phone,” Gill said.Sunita and Rohan were produced before a court, which remanded them to police custody till Jan 31. The police are currently tracing other accused family members.On Tuesday, Maharashtra state women’s commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar met Dipti’s family, gathered details about the alleged harassment and discussed the case with senior police officers.The police have intensified patrolling in the Uruli Kanchan area to prevent any untoward incidents.
