Mumbai: An assistant police inspector and three constables attached to the anti-terrorism cell at RCF police station have been arrested for allegedly stealing cash and gold jewellery from the house of a woman in Navi Mumbai during a drive to locate illegal Bangladeshi nationals last month. Separately, the same accused allegedly extorted Rs 5 lakh from another suspected Bangladeshi woman in Kalyan.API Vijay Sutar and constables Yogesh Khandge, Nemane and Petkar, have been placed under suspension. The alleged theft during the official raid came to light after an activist lodged a police complaint, prompting an internal inquiry. DCP Sameer Shaikh transferred the probe to Chembur police station. Scrutiny revealed that no seizure panchnama or official record of recovered items had been maintained after the raids. “It was found that several articles were missing, leading to allegations that the policemen had misappropriated the seized property and registration of an FIR late on Sunday. Later, they were arrested and suspended,” said a police officer. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact role of each of the accused and to recover the missing valuables, the officer added.
