Olive ridley lays eggs at Agonda during daytime

Canacona: In a rare daytime occurrence, an olive ridley turtle appeared on Agonda beach around 10.30am on Tuesday and started scooping sand to lay eggs. When tourists went close to the turtle to watch it in action, it stopped its activity.

At this juncture, someone alerted a lone rescuer on day duty who rushed to the site. He had difficulty in pulling the crowd away and had to call for help. It is only after more men came to his help that tourists and onlookers dispersed, and the turtle laid eggs before retreating to the sea.South marine range forest officer, Rajesh Naik, said they have a single rescuer posted during a the day as turtles usually arrive after sunset to lay eggs. This was the 15th turtle nesting of this season that has been protected by the forest staff for incubation, at the Agonda hatchery, said Naik.
