Vasco: Residents of Headland-Sada and surrounding areas have expressed severe concerns over persistent foul odors and suspected harmful emissions linked to coal handling operations at Mormugao Port Authority (MPA). In a letter addressed to the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the district collector of South Goa, local social activist Parshuram Sonurlekar highlighted the discomfort and health issues faced by the community, especially at night when the odors are most potent. The letter describes the smell as having a sulfurous or rotten-egg-like character, suggesting possible emissions of hydrogen sulfide (Hâ‚‚S) or other hazardous gases released during coal handling activities. Despite previous complaints to authorities, residents feel that their concerns have been largely ignored, leading to a loss of trust in the GSPCB.Sonurlekar emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and transparent air quality data, urging the GSPCB to address the issue with the seriousness it deserves for the sake of public health and environmental safety.GSPCB chairman Levinson Martins stated that a team of officials would be sent to the MPA to investigate the allegations. They will assess the situation and prepare a report for further action by the board. The community awaits timely intervention to ensure their health and safety.
