MNREGA being systematically weakened: Selja

Hisar: Congress MP Kumari Selja on Sunday alleged that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which provided crucial support to millions of families during difficult periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is now being deliberately weakened.Addressing a panchayat-level programme at Patli Dabar village (Ding Mod) in Sirsa district to protest the alleged dilution of MGNREGA, Selja said gram panchayats are being deprived of their decision-making powers, resulting in the neglect of local development needs. Kalanwali MLA Sheeshpal Keherwala, former MLA Prahlad Singh Gillakheda and a large number of villagers were present at the event.

Selja described MNREGA as a lifeline for rural households and said recent changes introduced by the central govt were undermining workers’ legal rights to demand employment, receive timely wages and ensure the autonomy of gram panchayats. The Congress leader also alleged misuse of central investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), claiming they were being used to harass political opponentsReferring to organisational activities, Selja said the training imparted to district presidents during Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to Kurukshetra would soon be reflected at the grassroots level. She added that the Congress would continue to raise public interest issues and strongly oppose what she termed the govt’s anti-people policies.
