Ludhiana police assure tight security for R-Day celebration at PAU

Ludhiana: Amid high alert for Republic Day, Ludhiana police have assured elaborate security arrangements for the celebration scheduled on Monday at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Around 3,000 police personnel will be deployed to maintain peace and order during the function.Punjab cabinet minister Harbhajan Singh ETO will preside over the Republic Day event. Ahead of the celebration, DGP, headquarters S S Srivastava visited Ludhiana on Saturday, inspected the arrangements at the PAU grounds and later held a meeting with police officials to review the security plan.

Police commissioner Swapan Sharma said the police had already ensured adequate arrangements for Republic Day, and with the current high alert, vigilance has been intensified. The entire force will be on duty. Around 500 personnel will be deployed at the PAU venue, while the remaining staff will be stationed across the city.Sharma added that from Sunday evening, police checkpoints will be set up under all police stations, particularly on main roads, chowks and market areas. Special focus will be on vehicles exiting the city and at entry points. Checking has also been carried out at major public places, including the railway station and bus stand.Police personnel at checkpoints are inspecting suspicious vehicles. CIA teams of the commissionerate are monitoring habitual offenders to prevent any untoward incident.The commissioner said that in the past couple of days, the police had conducted raids and cracked down on over 100 notorious criminals. He added that criminals often come to the city and rent accommodation before committing offences.
