Ahmedabad: The bodies of a septuagenarian woman and her son were recovered on Saturday from the Sabarmati, near the Vallabh Sadan boating area.Sabarmati Riverfront West police have registered a case of accidental death. Police said the two may have jumped into the river from the riverfront walkway.Police reached the spot after being alerted by the security staff. KN Vaghela, the police inspector of Sabarmati Riverfront West, said that they have registered a case of accidental death. The deceased have been identified as Pravina Pandya, 73, and her son Ashok, 45, both residents of Maninagar. The son was mentally ill. “We are investigating the case,” said inspector K N Vaghela “The family statement will be recorded later. At present, both bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.” According to police, a security guard noticed two bodies floating in the river and immediately informed the river rescue team and the police control room. Fire department personnel from the river rescue unit pulled the bodies out of the water. Police said identity documents, including Aadhaar cards, were found on the bodies, enabling them to contact the family members. The relatives later arrived at the scene and confirmed the identities.Cops said that initial inquiries suggested the mother and son may have taken the extreme step together due to personal distress. Police said they were examining whether the family faced chronic difficulties and were also checking for a suicide note or anything else that would indicate a motive for taking this step.
